Hillary Clinton mocks Donald Trump's microphone malfunction after debate
EN ROUTE TO RALEIGH -- Hillary Clinton gave her opponent a harsh review after their first meeting on the debate stage.
“Anybody who complains about the microphone is not having a good night,” Clinton said on Tuesday morning, just about 12 hours after the first presidential debate, which was held at Hofstra University on New York’s Long Island.
Speaking to reporters on board her campaign plane, Clinton said that she had a “great, great time” on Monday and that she is looking forward to debating Trump again in St. Louis, and again in Las Vegas, in a few weeks.
She said the debate made her think of baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks.
“He’d say ‘let’s play two,’” Clinton said.
Trump said earlier Monday morning in an interview on “Fox and Friends” that his microphone malfunctioned during the 95-minute debate.
“It was on and off and it was much lower than hers,” he said about the microphone, which he said tested fine ahead of the debate. “I don’t want to believe in conspiracy theories of course, but it was much lower than hers and it was crackling.”
Asked what was the most “critical moment” of the night, Clinton pointed to the candidates’ discussion of economic policy and, specifically, the comparison of their tax plans. Clinton has painted Trump’s tax plan as the most beneficial to wealthy Americans, like Trump.
She also said that the debate gave voters a chance to compare Clinton and Trump on style.
“I think his demeanor, his temperament, his behavior on the stage could be seen by everybody,” she said, declining to discuss the particulars. “People can draw their own conclusions...But the real point is about temperament and fitness and qualification...I think people saw last night some very clear differences between us.”
Trump said in the interview that he would give Clinton a “C+” grade on her debate performance and that he “was going to hit her with her husband’s women” but decided not to.
“He can run his campaign however he chooses,” Clinton said when asked by CBS News about Trump’s restraint. “I will continue to talk about what I want to do for the American people.”
