"Guac the Vote" - Taco trucks in Texas become voter registration booths
Hungry Texans can now take an advantage of a special Election day special: buy one taco, register to vote for free.
A Houston-based design group, led by Thomas Hull, transformed taco trucks into voter registration booths as part of a nationwide campaign with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) group to “Guac the Vote.” Launched on Tuesday, the designer’s inspiration for the unconventional idea birthed from the comments made by a Donald Trump supporter who predicted in an MSNBC interview that if illegal immigration went unchecked, “you’re going to have taco trucks [on] every corner.”
Hull tweeted from his company’s account, hoping to lure in customers, and unregistered voters:
The comment, which was uttered by “Latinos for Trump” co-founder Marco Gutierrez in early September, was yet another irritant that recalled the GOP nominee’s presidential announcement in June 2015, when he blamed Mexicans for criminal activities in the U.S. In May Trump infamously tweeted a picture of himself with a taco bowl and claimed he loved Mexicans.
Meanwhile, Democratic rival Hillary Clinton is taking advantage of the “guac the vote” initiative, hoping to attract a few more Latino voters--a demographic whose turnout could break the election’s virtual tie in November. Her campaign conducted a voter registration drive at eight taco trucks in Detroit.
Though USHCC formally endorsed Hillary Clinton, Javier Palomarez, the chamber’s president organization, reaffirmed the taco trunks bipartisanship.
“We will not be pitching a candidate,” he said to the Washington Post.
The makeshift voter registration booths are expected to stay open through Oct. 11, according to Houston Public Radio.
