Rare baby gorilla born at London Zoo
The Zoological Society of London is welcoming a rare new addition: a Western lowland gorilla was born at the zoo on Wednesday.
The species is critically endangered, making the new arrival even more of a cause for celebration.
The zoo says the baby gorilla, a male, appears to be healthy. He was born to 22-year-old Effie, who is also said to be doing well.
"Effie is keeping the infant close, and as she is a new mum, we're keeping a close eye on both of them too," gorilla keeper Glynn Hennessy said in an update on the zoo's website.
This is the second baby gorilla to be born to Kumbuka, the zoo's silverback male. The newborn's name has not yet been announced.
Western lowland gorillas are native to the tropical forests of central Africa, and there are only about 100,000 of them left in the world, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
