ISIS leader who aided foreign fighters killed in coalition airstrike
A senior member of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been killed in a coalition airstrike, a U.S. official announced Thursday, saying the death would hinder ISIS' ability to bring foreign fighters and equipment into Syria and Iraq.
Capt. Jeff Davis, a spokesman for the Department of Defense, confirmed that Tariq bin Tahar al-'Awni al-Harzi was killed by a coalition airstrike in Shaddadi, Syria, on June 16.
Al-Harzi, a senior ISIS leader, "worked to raise funds and recruit and facilitate the travel of fighters for the terrorist organization," Davis said.
Davis said that al-Harzi was responsible for moving people and supplies into Syria and Iraq, and procured and shipped weapons from Libya to Syria for ISIS.
"Al-Harzi also facilitated the use of suicide and vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks in Iraq," Davis said.
Al-Harzi is the brother of another ISIS member killed last month, CBS News correspondent David Martin reports. The brother, Ali bin Tahar al-'Awni al-Harzi, was a person of interest in the 2012 Benghazi attack.
