For one day only, Google Glass on sale for everyone

For a limited time -- today only -- anyone in the United States can now become a Google Glass Explorer for the low, low price of $1500, not including tax.

On Tuesday, Google is opening up sales of its wearable computer to any adult in the United States, with a pair of sunglasses or the newly introduced prescription frame included in every purchase. Until now, its "Explorer" program allowed only a limited number of applicants to purchase the high-tech specs.

"Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better," the company announced in a Google+ post last week. "But every day we get requests from those of you who haven't found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too."

However, space in the Explorer program will still be limited, Google warns, without specifying how many spots would actually be available.

Only available in the U.S. for the time being, Google apologized to everyone else, saying that it is "just not ready yet to bring Glass to other countries."

According to the Google Glass signup form, in order to be an Explorer, those interested must be a US resident with a U.S. shipping address and over 18 years old.

Anyone who doesn't sign up today may have to wait a while longer before Google Glass becomes commercially available. Google reportedly hopes to release it in stores later this year, and CNET reports that the commercial version may sell for less than $1,500.

Sporting Google Glass doesn't come without risk, as some early adopters have faced a backlash from those who believe the mini-computer with its wearable camera violates their privacy. Several Glass-wearers say they've even been attacked.

Google has tried to assuage non-Glass wearers, by addressing common concerns and publishing a list of do's and don'ts, urging users not to be a "Glasshole."

Google is expected to unveil more details about its plans at the Google I/O 2014 conference in late June.
